Four conversions, one constant
One mile = 1.60934 kilometers. Every running unit conversion comes from that single number.
Min/mile → Min/km
pace_min_per_km = pace_min_per_mile ÷ 1.60934
Example: 8:00 min/mile = 480 sec/mile ÷ 1.60934 = 298 sec/km = 4:58 min/km.
Min/km → Min/mile
pace_min_per_mile = pace_min_per_km × 1.60934
Example: 5:00 min/km = 300 sec/km × 1.60934 = 483 sec/mile = 8:03 min/mile.
Min/km → Km/h
speed_km_per_h = 60 ÷ pace_min_per_km
Example: 5:00 min/km → 60 ÷ 5 = 12 km/h. For decimals: 5:30 = 5.5 min → 60 ÷ 5.5 = 10.9 km/h.
Min/mile → Mph
speed_mph = 60 ÷ pace_min_per_mile
Example: 8:00 min/mile → 60 ÷ 8 = 7.5 mph.

Two conversion mistakes runners make
1. Multiplying instead of dividing
To go from min/mile to min/km you divide by 1.60934 (a km is shorter than a mile, so each km takes less time). To go from min/km to min/mile you multiply by 1.60934. People reverse these all the time. The mnemonic: if the unit gets shorter (km vs. mile), the time per unit gets shorter too.
2. Confusing pace and speed conversions
Pace (min/km) is inversely proportional to speed (km/h). Doubling speed halves pace, not the other way around. The formula km/h = 60 ÷ min/km works because pace is a duration. If you forget this and "convert" 5:00 min/km to "5 km/h" you're off by a factor of 2.4.
